Alienated and full of fire, two sisters navigate a chaotic world of sex, drugs, and dissolving identities after the loss of their mother. The younger sister, Julie Randeria, discovers that her assimilation into the world of Silicon Valley’s teenagers only works when she lets go of her personality. But where does personality end and madness begin?

When the mythology that barely holds her family together unravels, Julie is driven to the edge of unreality. Meanwhile, the limits of her sister and father’s empathy are tested. Beautiful, unusual language sweeps readers into the consciousness and experiences of ordinary people struggling with what it means to be perceived as “normal” today and the consequences of cultural alienation.
“If THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER had a more literary, female cousin, it would be SPARKS OFF YOU. SPARKS whisks me back to my own high school years with an aching visceral clarity — it haunts and it hurts, but it’s a good kind of pain.” – Phoebe Kitanidis, author of WHISPER, GLIMMER, and BE MY YOKO ONO
SPARKS OFF YOU is available at

A note from the author…

Being the object of a bully’s abuse is extremely painful. Sometimes you wonder what you’ve done to make the bully cruel. Other times you think there must be something deeply wrong with you. Neither is true. The strange thing about bullying is that frequently the bully him or herself feels inferior and lashes out because she feels inferior or threatened. It’s important to speak up, to tell a trusted person, to defend yourself, to know that the bullying is not happening because of something that’s wrong with you, but instead because of turmoil  or other negative emotions inside the bully.
